Obituary of Archie L. Gilbert

Brasher Falls- Mr. Archie L. Gilbert, 85, passed away Monday February 28, 2011 at the Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake, with the love and support of his family by his side.
Arrangements are entrusted with Hammill Funeral Home, Winthrop.
Born on January 19, 1926 in Raymondville, Archie was the son of the late Archie F. and Exilda (Sochia) Gilbert. He was educated locally in the Louisville/Raymondville area. On April 18, 1944 Archie enlisted in the United States Navy. He served his country with much dedication, earning; the European Theater Ribbon, the American Theater Ribbon, as well as a Victory Medal. Archie was honorably discharged on June 5, 1946.
On February 10, 1948 Archie married the former Betty Peets at the Massena Sacred Heart Church. They shared a dedicated union filled with support, love, and family.
After many years of service as a crane driver, Archie retired from Alcoa in 1988. This allowed him to enjoy more time with his grandchildren and spend time on his hobbies.
Archie had a passion for cars. He enjoyed working on them as well as the amusement and thrill of the racetrack. He loved car races, especially when he could be present to cheer on his son and grandson who are avid car racers. Archie also took pleasure in collecting antique coins.
He was a member of the VFW in North Lawrence and a communicant of St. Patrick Church in Brasher Falls.
He is survived by; his wife of 63 years, Betty, his children; Kim Gilbert of Montour Falls, Hal and Sherry Gilbert of Brasher Falls, Pamela and Chris Mossow of St. Regis Falls, Todd and Darleen Gilbert of Franklinton, NC, Lori Gilbert of Nicholville, and Larry Kirk of Mitchell, IN, 17 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, and his sister Gladys Derouchie of Lake Havasu, AZ.
Archie was predeceased by his daughter Brenda Kirk in June of 2009, and his siblings, Dorothy Jerome, William Gilbert, and Mary Gilbert.
A Memorial Mass will be held Thursday afternoon at 1:00pm at St. Patrick Church with Fr. Jack Downs celebrating. Burial will take place in the spring.
