Massena - Nora M. Crowley, 93, passed away Friday, June 1, 2012, at the St. Regis Nursing Home, with her family at her bedside. Arrangements are entrusted to the Hammill Funeral Home in Winthrop. Nora was born in North Lawrence on February 15, 1919, the daughter of William and Mary (Hayes) Cotter. She graduated from North Lawrence High School in 1936 and from the Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in 1939. During WWII, Nora served 34 months in the European Theatre with the Second General Hospital unit from Syracuse. She received a commission as Second Lieutenant in the Army Nurses Corps in November, 1942. After being honorably discharged, she attended and graduated from New York University with a B.S. in nursing. On February 23, 1952 she married John B. Crowley at the Church of St. Stephen in New York City. John predeceased her on March 17, 1995. Early in her career, Nora was a nurse at Potsdam Hospital. Later, she was employed by the Massena Central Schools as a school-nurse teacher. Nora was a communicant of St. Mary's Church, a member of the New York State Retired Teachers, the LCBA, the VFW (N. Lawrence), the American Legion (Winthrop) and the Massena Hospital Auxiliary. She also volunteered at St. Vincent de Paul and the St. Regis Nursing Home. Nora was predeceased by her husband, John; four sisters: Margaret Baker, Mary Conn, Sarah Cotter and Katherine (Kitty) Dziewisz and two brothers: John Cotter and William Cotter. Nora is survived by nieces and nephews: Kathy Dziewisz, Braintree, MA; Stephen Dziewisz, Watertown, NY; Mary Conn-Fitch, San Francisco, CA, Michael Conn, San Mateo, CA, Sharon Lantry, Helena, NY, Patti Jo Johnson, Winthrop, NY, Sheila Collier, Summerfield, FL and several great-nieces and great-nephews. Friends and family may call from 3-7pm on Tuesday, June 5 at the Hammill Funeral Home, Winthrop. A Mass of Christian Burial for Nora will be held on Wed., June 6 at 10am at St. Patrick's Church, Brasher Falls. Interment will follow at St. Patrick's Cemetery.
