Massena - Kathlene Q. Oakes, 81, passed away Monday evening June 18, 2012, at the St. Regis Nursing Home, surrounded by the love of her family. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Hammill Funeral Home in Winthrop.
Kathlene was born on December 23, 1930 in Brushton, daughter of the late Charles and Ethel (Sawyer) Queor. She married Francis J. Oakes, Sr. on May 16, 1950 in North Lawrence and they shared a devoted union of 55 years until his passing on February 2, 2005.
Caring for her family was very important to Kathlene. She took pride in preparing meals and sewing for them; but in her free moments she always enjoyed a good book or a puzzle. She loved games of chance, especially cards or bingo, but trips to the casino were by far her favorite. Kathlene liked music; but in her opinion there were only two types of music, Country and Western.
Surviving Kathlene are two daughters and sons in law; Effie and Raymond Ashley, Jr. of Mechanicville and Bonnie and Paul Dibble of Brasher Falls, three sons and daughters in law; Francis and Linda Oakes of Massena, David and Brenda Oakes of Mechanicville and Gerald and Lonna Oakes of Schroon Lake, two brothers; Robert Queor of Sodus and Edward Mayville of Syracuse, four sisters; Pearl DeShais, Violet McGilvary, Ethel Marie Queor, all of Syracuse; 17 grandchildren; many great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren. Along with her husband; olone brother, William Queor , two sisters, Myrtle Sharp, and Viola LaShomb predeceased her.
Visitation will be Wednesday from 6 to 8 pm at the Hammill Funeral Home. Her Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday at 10 am at St. Patrick Church in Brasher Falls with Rev. Garry Giroux celebrating. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery.
