Winthrop - Anna L. Thompson, 81, passed away peacefully Sunday, June 24, 2012, at her home surrounded by the love of her family. Arrangements are entrusted to the Hammill Funeral Home in Winthrop. Anna was born on June 8, 1931 in Potsdam, daughter of the late Thomas and Candida (Cerro) Rufa. She graduated from Brasher Stockholm High School in 1950. On November 26, 1955, Anna married Leland Thompson at St. Patrick Church in Brasher Falls with Fr. Nichols celebrating. They shared 56 years in a union devoted to honoring their vows of love and commitment to each other, and excelling in domestic discussions. At one time, she worked at Crouse-Hines in Syracuse and as a bookkeeper at WMSA Radio in Massena. Anna cared for her family, making their concerns and comforts her highest priority. A gentle, kindhearted lady; Anna was there to help family, friends and neighbors. She took pleasure in camping, boating, crafts and spending time with her grandchildren. Anna had a strong faith in her life's journey and found peace as she worshipped at her parish, St. Patrick Church. Since the onset of her illness, the loving care she received from her husband was unparalleled, which greatly improved Anna's quality of life these past five years. She is survived by her husband Leland; three sons, David and Mary Jo Thompson of Winthrop, Thomas Thompson of Brasher Falls and Robert and Sally Thompson of Long Pond, PA; sister and brother in law, Grace and Lloyd Best of Winthrop; eight grandchildren, Zachary, Abbey, Jacob, Jeremy, Adam & Brandy, Amanda, Todd and Michelle; four great grandchildren, Max, Haidynn, Oakley and Sophia; several nieces and nephews. Two brothers, Paul Rufa and Frank Rufa, predeceased her. Visitation will be Thursday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 at the funeral home. Anna's funeral service and Celebration of Life will commence Friday morning at 10 with a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Patrick Church with Rev. Garry Giroux celebrating, with burial to follow in the parish cemetery. Those wishing to express an act of kindness, in lieu of flowers, please consider memorials in Anna's name to Hospice and Palliative Care of St. Lawrence Valley, Inc., 6805 US Hwy 11, Potsdam, NY 13676 or Brasher Winthrop Volunteer Fire Dept., P.
