Potsdam- Leon F. Barney Jr., 53, passed away on July 14, 2012 at the Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester with the love, comfort, and support of his family by his side. Arrangements are entrusted with Hammill Funeral Home in Winthrop. On October 9, 1958 in Massena, Leon was born to the late Leon F. and Jane H. (LaClair) Barney. He was raised and educated locally. On October 13, 1979 he married the former Laura L. White. They shared a devoted union of love for 32 years. He worked as a recruiter for the US ARMY. Leon was in active duty and dedicated much of his life to serving and honoring his country; something he was very proud of. He retired and was honorably discharged in 2002. Those who knew and loved Leon, say he was a kind, generous and outgoing man; "He would give the shirt of his back or the last $20 in his pocket." He loved his children and adored his grandchildren. Sports were a big part of Leon's life as well. He enjoyed watching hockey, was an avid NY Jets, and Syracuse basketball fan. In the past, he coached his children's T-Ball teams in Waddington, and at the Oswego YMCA. He was a member of the Potsdam Elks Lodge. Leon is survived by his wife, Laura; his children, Amanda and Owen Meashaw of Parishville, and Robert Barney and his companion Brandy Phillips of Potsdam; 3 grandchildren, Emma, Collin and Aidan Barney; and one on the way, Eli Meashaw ; his father-in-law, Robert White of Potsdam; his siblings; Margaret "Peggy" and Pete Salwa of MA, Sandy Barney of Massena, Michael and Cheryl Barney of Massena, Wayne and Tracy Barney of Massena, Jeffery and Ann Barney of Massena, Lloyd "Andy" and Lisa Barney of Massena, Christopher and Cindy Barney of FL, Paul John and Kim Barney of Massena, and Patrick and Darcy Barney of Massena, many nieces, nephews, cousins; and his canine companion, Murphy. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his mother-in-law, Phyllis White. Visitation will be Thursday from 11-2 at the funeral home. Leon's Funeral Service and Celebration of life will commence at 2pm, with Rev. Lee Sweeney officiating. Burial will follow in Winthrop Cemetery.
