Hopkinton- Mrs. Barbara M. Sochia, 84, passed away peacefully in the comfort of her home with the support and love of her family. Arrangements have been entrusted to Hammill Funeral Home in Winthrop.
Barbara was born on April 4, 1928 in Worcester, MA, daughter of the late Frank and Melissa (Somers) Berdrow. Barbara moved to St. Regis Falls at a few months of age and attended school there as well. On May 18, 1946 she and James E. Sochia were married, he predeceased her. On April 27, 1973 she was united in marriage to Eli Robert Sochia.
Barbara was a lifelong homemaker who enjoyed a variety of needlecrafts, sewing, bird watching, gardening, and cooking. Mrs. Sochia perfected a potato salad that was requested and enjoyed at many family and social functions alike.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church in St. Regis Falls and the Order of the Eastern Star.
Barbara was a loving wife, mother, stepmother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She is survived by her husband of almost 40 years, Eli, 5 daughters; Rosemary and Webster Brown of N.Lawrence, Patricia and Theodore Meyers of Juneau, AK., Sue and Roderick Yaddow of Dickinson Center, Robin and Michael Johnson of St. Regis Falls, and Cynthia and Steven Follett of Massena, 6 stepchildren; Gilbert and Calista Sochia of Potsdam, Wayne and Piper Sochia of Hopkinton, Sheila and David Gardner of Dekalb Junction, Kevin Sochia and Cindy of Potsdam, Loren Sochia of Potsdam, and Darcy and Kathy Sochia of Madrid, as well as 11 grandchildren, 16 step grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, 16 step great grandchildren, and 5 great-great grandchildren; the youngest of whom was born on December 23. She is also survived by brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, and many, many nieces and nephews.
Barbara was the youngest of 10 children and was predeceased by her siblings. She was also predeceased by a daughter, stepson, step grandson, great granddaughter, and step great granddaughter.
Visitation will be Friday from 12-2 at the Hammill Funeral Home in Winthrop. Barbara's Funeral Service and Celebration of Life will commence upon conclusion of visitation at 2pm with Pastor Lee Sweeney officiating.
For those wishing to express an act of kindness, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Barbara's honor may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of St. Lawrence Valley.
