Obituary of Maurice A. Phelps

Stockholm- Mr. Maurice A. Phelps, 86, passed away March 1, 2013 at his home with the love and support of his family by his side. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Hammill Funeral Home in Winthrop.
Maurice was born in Stockholm on August 4, 1926, son of the late Alanson and Ledeth (Wilson) Phelps. He was raised and educated locally, graduating from the Brasher-Stockholm School in 1944. Maurice married Olivia Wilson Hunter on April 21, 1965 at the Brasher Falls United Methodist Church. The two shared a devoted union of 44 years, until the time of her passing on June 11, 2009.
For many years Maurice operated his own dairy farm, and in his younger days spent time sugaring.
Maurice took pleasure in hunting. He was always fond of a conversation; whether it was a little chit-chatting, or telling a story, he truly enjoyed visiting and making new friendships.
He was a member of: the Buckton United Methodist Church, the Christian Community Men’s Group, the Winthrop Fish and Game Club, and a 50 year member of the Winthrop Grange.
Maurice is survived by his children: Marcy and John Phelps-Hand of Auburn, Mary and Galon Eldridge of Brasher Falls, Marie and John Plachotnik of Frankfort, Joyce Hunter of Massena, Michael Hunter of Winthrop, Susie and Glenn Cinnamon of Winchester, Ont., and Jeffrey and Danielle Hunter of Winthrop, 2 grandchildren, 17 step-grandchildren, 10 step-great grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was predeceased by 2 sisters: Ruth Lord and Milly West, and 3 brothers: Wilson “Bill” Phelps, Walter Phelps, and one in infancy.
There will be no calling hours. Maurice’s Funeral Service and Celebration of Life will be Monday at 11am at the Buckton United Methodist Church, with Pastor Helen St. Louis officiating. Burial will take place in Winthrop Cemetery in the spring.
For those wishing to express an act of kindness, in lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in Maurice’s honor to Hospice and Palliative Care of St. Lawrence Valley Inc.
