Potsdam - Charles E. Varney, 59, passed away unexpectedly, Monday, March 18, 2013 at Canton Potsdam Hospital. Arrangements are entrusted to the Hammill Funeral Home in Winthrop.
Charles was born on September 16, 1953 in Sharon, CT, son of the late Frederick J. and Mildred C. (Morey) Varney. He received his education at Potsdam Central School and entered the work force. Charles had an industrious work ethic, holding multiple jobs, and then accepting a position at Potsdam Central School as Bus Driver and Custodian, retiring in 2009.
He took pleasure in activities with his family; 4 wheeling, lawnmowers, cars, fishing, boating, or just relaxing with his grandchildren. He embraced life with Julie, blending their families with a heartfelt commitment. He was generous, kind and gave of himself unconditionally.
He is survived by his life partner, Julie Dashno; one son, Charles A. and Jade Varney of Norfolk and one daughter, Sara Varney of Norfolk; three chosen children, Sarah McGregor of Massena, Jessica McGregor of Norwood and William McGregor of Rochester; one brother, Frederick J. and Katherine Varney Jr. of Hannawa Falls; one sister, Eileen and Alfred Slater of Ancram; one step-brother, Lonie and Joan Varney of West Stockholm; one sister, Mary Ann Fuller of Gouverneur; nine grandchildren; many nieces and nephews, Christopher Varney, Heather Burns, Ann-Marie Adams, Michael Varney, Kim Thompson, Jimmy Varney, Bobby Varney, Kenny Varney, Freddy Fisher, Lisa Fisher and Debbie Fisher. He was predeceased by Jimmy Varney, Sr.
Visitation will be Thursday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 at the Hammill Funeral Home in Winthrop, with a Remembrance Gathering at 8. Burial will be in Visitation Cemetery in Norfolk.
