Ogdensburg- Mr. Gerald J. "Smithy" Smith, 59, passed away peacefully Friday October 3, 2014, at the Claxton Hepburn Medical Center. Arrangements are entrusted to Hammill Funeral Home in Winthrop. Gerald was born in Syracuse on March 4, 1955 to the late Lyle and Henrietta Smith. He was raised and educated locally; studying a year of carpentry at BOCES and graduating from St. Lawrence Central High School in 1975. For some time he worked maintenance at Kennedy Elementary School in Ogdensburg. Smithy always had a love for sports. Throughout high school he was the manager for different sports teams, such as baseball and football, and he was an avid Syracuse Football and Buffalo Bills fan. In his leisure time Gerald took pleasure in fishing and gardening. He is survived by: his sister, Joanne Wagstaff of Brasher Falls, his nieces': Julie Maslyn, Jenny Marsh, Jerrie O'Rourke, Jessie Chandler, Sarah Gregory, Stacie Sears, Stephanie Morrison, and his nephew, Stephan Chapman. Gerald was predeceased by his sister, Lorraine Chapman. Services for Gerald will be held privately at the convenience of his family. For those wishing to express an act of kindness, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice & Palliative Care of St. Lawrence Valley Inc.; 6805 US Highway 11, Potsdam NY 13676.
