Potsdam- Mrs. Elaine (Munson) Dougan, 94, passed away Tuesday December 2, 2014 at the Canton-Potsdam Hospital surrounded by the love and comfort of her family. Arrangements are entrusted to Hammill Funeral Home in Winthrop.
Elaine was born in Winthrop on August 21, 1920 to the late Guy and Mildred (Castle) Munson. She was raised locally and graduated from Brasher-Winthrop High School. She then continued her education at the Philadelphia Divers Business School earning a 1 year degree.
On June 25, 1943, Elaine married Robert E. Dougan at her parent's home on Pickle Street in Winthrop. They shared a blessed union of over 37 years and raised their family built upon a strong foundation of love. Robert passed away on May 13, 1981.
She began her working career at Montgomery Ward in Potsdam in the business office. Elaine was then employed at Clarkson University in Potsdam as an accounts payable clerk for over 20 years, the position from which she retired.
Elaine was blessed with gentle hands an eye for detail, color, and patterns; this was reflected in her quilting. She has made well over 100 quilts for her family and friends, as well as the ones that surrounded her and her home. In 2011 she received the TAUNY Award; Traditional Arts in Upstate New York, for her evidence of mastery and creative commitment to her art form of quilting over time, and her commitment to her community and teaching others. Something she was very proud of. Elaine was the matriarch for the Quilters Club in Parishville, meeting often to create tie quilts and share ideas.
She is survived by her children; Robert "Bob" and Lona Dougan of Potsdam, James "Jim" and Gladys Dougan of Tully, and Jane and William "Bill" Lefort of Land-o-Lakes, FL., a legacy of, 12 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren, who she adored greatly. Survivors also include many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Elaine was predeceased by 3 sisters and 2 brothers: Charlotte Thomas, Kathleen Tebo, Marion Whalen, Garth Munson, and Donald Munson.
Visitation will be Friday from 2-4 and 6-8 at the funeral home. Elaine's Funeral Service and Celebration of Life will be Saturday at 10am at the funeral home with Pastor Lee Sweeney officiating. Burial will follow in Hopkinton-Ft. Jackson Cemetery.
For those wishing to express an act of kindness, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Elaine's honor to your Charity of Choice.
