Brasher Falls – Mary A. Ezyk, 90, passed away Sunday, December 15, 2019 at Massena Memorial Hospital. Arrangements are entrusted to Hammill Funeral Home in Winthrop, where calling hours will be held Wednesday from 4 pm to 7 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at St. Patrick Church in Brasher Falls on Thursday at 10 am. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
On May 30, 1929, Mary was born in the Town of Stockholm to Theodore and Genevieve (Phelix) Thompson. She graduated from St. Joseph’s Academy in Brasher Falls in 1946 and went on to Nursing School at Mercy Hospital in Watertown for two years. She married Walter D. Ezyk at St. Patrick Church on September 3, 1949 with Fr. Nichols celebrating.
From 1963-1981, she lived in St. Louis, MO with her family where she was active in all aspects of the church and as a Girl Scout Leader. Moving to Winthrop in 1981, Mary and Walter co-taught religious education at St. Patrick Church. She loved her crossword puzzles, word games and reading, and had a passion for chocolate. Her family knew that between 7 and 8 pm not to call so she could watch Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy!
She is survived by her daughter Jacquelin Ezyk-Forbes and DeWitt Forbes of Massena, her siblings; Leland Thompson of Winthrop and Margaret Gauthier of Brasher Falls, two grandsons; Nicholas Ezyk and Spencer Ezyk, many nieces and nephews. Besides her husband, Mary was predeceased by a daughter, Terre Ezyk, five siblings; Helen Brown, William Thompson, James Thompson, Deland Thompson, and Bernard Thompson.
