Obituary of Patty Nurney
Mary Patricia (Patty Nurney) King passed away on Friday, December 30, 2022 with her loving family by her side.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 4th, 2023 at Hammill Funeral Home in Winthrop from 1:00PM to 3:00 PM. A funeral mass will be held at 11AM the following day on Thursday, January 5th, 2023 at St. Patrick Church.
Patty was born in Carthage NY on May 22,1927. She started school in Carthage, moved to Lawrenceville and graduated from North Lawrence High School. She, her brother Billy and her beloved stepfather Gerald spent years planning and building the family home and then she spent decades building ties to the community around her. Patty managed Codie’s Corner Store for 30 years and later retired after spending 5 years at Nicholville Telephone Company. She regularly attended Church and spent hours each week making cards to send to more than 20 community members, so they knew that they were loved and thought of.
She fell in love with William Nurney late in life, and married in her 60s for the first time. The two were married in Plattsburgh on April 7th, 1992.
Her endless compassion and loving spirit inspired the staff who cared for her towards the end of her life to refer to her as “Grandma” and she often joked that they should be paying her for the therapy sessions. She loved each of them in their own way, just as she had with anyone who needed to be loved throughout the course of her lifetime.
Patty is survived by her brother; Gerald “Billy” Meacham, as well as over 32 “adopted” children who called her mom. Despite never having any biological children of her own, Patty spent a lifetime “adopting” countless “kids”, “grandchildren”, “nieces” and “nephews”.
Besides her parents, Patty was predeceased by the love of her life; William J, Nurney, as well as her sisters; Charmaine McLaughlin, and Elizabeth Engle.
Donations in Pattys’ name can be made to the Potsdam Humane Society. Arrangements are entrusted to Hammill Funeral Home where memories and words of comfort can be shared at www.hammillfh.com
