Obituary of Allen J. Carvel

Winthrop - Allen J. Carvel, 90, passed away Sunday, July 03, 2011, in the privacy and comfort of his friend's home, June Lavine, with his family and Hospice attending to his needs. Arrangements are entrusted to the Hammill Funeral Home in Winthrop.
Mr. Carvel was born on January 3, 1921 in Brasher, son of the late Allen J. and Ellen Hayes Carvel and attended Helena Schools. He married Esther Robertson of Massena at Sacred Heart Rectory on September 2, 1945, with Fr. Michael Geroski officiating. Mrs. Carvel passed away May 30, 1997.
He started working at ALCOA in Massena on Oct. 10, 1940 and when he retired in 1971, was working in Building 140. After retirement, he owned and operated Carvel's Tavern by the CC Dam and then The Jug in North Lawrence. Those who know him will remember him for his industrious work ethic, was quick-witted, with the ability to spin a good story.
He was a parishioner of St. Patrick Church; a member of the ALCOA 25 Year Club, Tri Town Senior Citizens, Massena Senior Citizens and was a past member of the Brasher Fire Dept and Winthrop Fire Dept.
He is survived by his two sons and daughters in law, Charles and Maryellen Carvel of Canton and Leonard and Lynda Carvel of Winthrop; his friend, June Lavine of Brasher Falls; five grandchildren, Greg and Daina Carvel of Ottawa, Mary Beth and Randy Sieminski, Suzanne and Troy Creurer, and Sarah and Jessie Coburn, all of Canton and Julie Carvel of Winthrop; ten great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Five brothers, Bertram, Bernard, William, James and Frank; five sisters, Janette Carvel, Katherine Carvel, Sr. Mary "Margaret" Marcella, Sarah Klamm and Agnes Rose.
His family will receive friends at the Hammill Funeral Home in Winthrop, Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday morning at 10 at St. Patrick Church in Brasher Falls. Burial will be in St. Patrick Cemetery in Brasher Falls.
