Obituary of Raymond L. Austin

St. Regis Falls - Raymond L. Austin, age 89 passed away July 27, 2011 at Massena Memorial Hospital, for a short time he was a resident of the St. Regis Nursing Home, Massena. Arrangements are entrusted with the Hammill Funeral Home, St. Regis Falls Mr. Austin was born March 11, 1922 in St. Regis Falls the son of the late Albert and Jessie (Norton) Austin. He received his education locally through the St. Regis Falls Schools, and entered into the United States Army October 10, 1942, during his enlistment he was trained as a field medic during World War II and was the recipient of the American Service Medal, Europe-African Medal, Eastern Service Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal. While enlisted he married Frances Crewdson, on August 11, 1945 in Liverpool, England. Mr. Austin was honorably discharged from the Army December 6, 1945, with his bride they returned back to the North Country. He began employment with Alcoa, where he worked in many departments, however retired as a Machine Operator with 35 years of service to the company. He is survived by his wife Frances; three sons, Raymond Jr., David and Michael all of St. Regis Falls. Also surviving him are six grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren. He is predeceased by three brothers Henry, John, and Jerome, and three sisters, Vera, Leatha, and Violet. He was a member of the Alcoa 25 year club, past member of the American Legion, St. Regis Falls, and a life member of the VFW in Malone. Mr. Austin enjoyed hunting, Jigsaw puzzles, and at one time his CB radio where he was known as "PAPASON". A graveside service will be held Friday afternoon at 1:00 at Forest Cemetery, St. Regis Falls. The American Legion of St. Regis Falls will be providing the Military Honors, Pastor Donald Work, will be offering the prayers of committal. At the conclusion of the service all who knew Raymond are cordially invited to join the family at the St. Regis Falls Adult Center for a luncheon and fellowship. Memorial Contributions in his honor may be made to, St. Regis Falls Adult Center, or to the St. Regis Falls Volunteer Fire and Rescue.
