Winthrop - Funeral services honoring the life of Dorothy Elizabeth Mello Jefferson, 85 will be held Wednesday morning at 11:00 A.M at the Mohawk Assembly of God Church, Hogansburg, with the Rev. William A. Brant presiding. Burial will take place at a later date in the Elmwood Cemetery, Fort Covington . Mrs. Jefferson passed away Friday (March 26,2010) at the Canton Potsdam Hospital with her family by her side.
The family will receive friends at the Hammill Funeral Home, Winthrop Tuesday from 2-4 and 6-8.
Dorothy was born March 6, 1925 in Castine, Maine, the daughter of Frank & Bernice (Lewis) Mello. She graduated Thursday, June 18, 1942, from Freeport High School, Freeport, Maine. In 1951 she married Lum C. Jefferson. For many years she was employed with the Travelers Insurance Agency in Hartford Connecticut, as a Data entry clerk.
Surviving Dorothy are her children, George, Lum, Charles, Kevin , Andrew, Paul, Steven, Frank, Harvey, Grace, Carol, Dorothy, Cynthie, and Anne. Also surviving are her grandchildren, Charlie Jr, Tywanna, Danita, Willie, 45 other grandchildren, many great grandchildren and many great, great grandchildren. Dorothy was blessed to see four generations of her families children raised. She is also survived by her brothers Brian and Richard.and sister Bernice (Mello)Williams.
Dorothy loved her family near and far. She found great pleasure in missionary work and sponcered children in many different countries. She was also a noted poet.
