Buckton - Eleanor J. Dougan, 92, passed away unexpectedly Sunday morning at Massena Memorial Hospital. Arrangements are entrusted with the Hammill Funeral Home in Winthrop.
Eleanor was born on May 21, 1921 in the Town of Stockholm, daughter of the late Edward and Olivia (Scott) Garvey. She graduated from Parishville High School and went to work as a home maker for the Phippen and Jenkins families. On December 13, 1941, she married Billy Riley Dougan at the Methodist Parsonage in Potsdam with Rev. Monmouth H. Horton officiating. They shared a blessed union of 55 years before Mr. Dougan's passing on September 19, 1996.
Eleanor worked at Canton Potsdam Hospital for many years, where she was affectionately known as "Dougie". She had the ability to quickly bring comfort to people as she assisted them in the ER. She was generous, dedicated, committed and full of life. Her pastimes included cooking, baking, caring for others and passing on her values of love, friendship and laughter to her family. She was devoted to her church, Buckton United Methodist Church, where she served as a Trustee and was a member of the United Methodist Women.
Eleanor is survived by her children, Judy and James Montgomery of Chittenango, Edd and Jennie Dougan of Auburn and Billy Dougan of Winthrop; grandchildren, Lewis and Julie Ann Reals, Jr. of Chittenango, Steven and Jill Just of Chittenango, Heather Lynn and Randy Osborne of Auburn, Edwin and Zhuying Dougan of Auburn and Kristen Winters of Sleepy Hollow; great grandchildren, Brittany Ann Reals, Brandon Lewis Reals, Shelby Lynn Just, Bradley Edward Dougan, Dakota Riley Dougan, Madison Jacot and Sami Riley Just; her in laws, Ruthie Garvey of Winthrop, Pete and Lila Fisk of Brasher Falls, Elaine Dougan of Potsdam and Edwina Elek of Rochester; several nieces and nephews. Always close to her heart were the memories of her husband, Billy; brother, Lawrence E. Garvey; and two sisters, Edna Green and Audrey Garvey.
Visitation will be Tuesday from 4 to 7 at the Hammill Funeral Home in Winthrop. Eleanor's Funeral Service and Celebration of Life will be Wednesday at 11am at the Buckton United Methodist Church, 710 Buckton Road, Winthrop. Burial will follow at Winthrop Cemetery in Winthrop.
