Winthrop - Thomas A. Hagelund, 58, passed away unexpectedly, December 5, 2014. Arrangements are entrusted to the Hammill Funeral Home in Winthrop.
Thomas was born on February 5, 1956 in Lyons, son of George A. and Janice C. (Hovey) Hagelund. He graduated from St. Lawrence Central School and from SUNY at Potsdam. Tom was a skilled mason, working many years for Gordie Snell in Winthrop and his own business he established in 1989, "Armstrong Masonry." He specialized in restoration and new construction of stone, brick, block and concrete buildings.
He was motivated to improve his skill in refractory installation and traveled to France to research the traditional masonry wood-fired bread ovens. Spending a month touring in France, Tom measured and photographed old, still functioning bread ovens, while discussing techniques and materials with bakers and masons. He leaves his legacy on many buildings throughout the world.
As a giving person, Tom traveled with Masons on a Mission to Guatemala to build vented cook stoves to help improve the way of life for the citizens. He loved to travel; going to Belize, Italy, Costa Rico, Central and South America, Mexico, Cuba and Uruguay.
Tom's passion was the outdoors; an expert on forestry with the natural ability to reflect his vision in his photography. He found peace in music, reading, movies, sculpturing and the companionship of animals. A meeting with Tom always made a person feel good and his hugs were unforgettable. His friendships mirrored his workmanship; built on strong foundation and lasted a lifetime.
His memory remains in the hearts of his parents, George and Janice Hagelund of Massena, his brother, Ronald Hagelund of Nicholville, his sister, Cheri Hagelund of Brasher Falls, a niece, Nikia Arquiett of Brasher Falls, a nephew, Josh Arquiett of Maryland, a great nephew, Ethan Arquiett of Maryland, his longtime companion and soul mate, Jan Rutella of Potsdam and a daughter and son.
His family will receive friends Wednesday from 5 to 6 pm at the Knapps Station Community Church, 3085 CR 47, Norwood, NY. Tom's Celebration of Life Service will commence at 6 pm.
Flowers are gratefully declined. Those wishing to express an act of kindness please consider donations in Tom's memory to the Arbor Day Foundation, 211 N. 112th Street, Nebraska City, NE 68401 or Masons on a Mission, at http://masonsonamission.org/ or plant a tree and send a photo to his family.

Tommy was a true renaissance man: He worked with his hands, his head and most importantly, his heart. He could build a house, nurse a puppy and bring a smile of joy to everyone around him. He was someone who could hold opinions passionately while still being open to new ideas.
His light is gone from the world so now we must shine a little brighter, even through our tears, to bring back the balance of the world.

Tom always inspired me. He was always so open and kind to everyone. He was so active with trees, garden, books, building, mechanics... When I told him several friends were excited about an Australian Film "Bliss", Tom understood and said book was also good. No one even knew about the book!
I will miss him. My heart goes out to the family and many loved ones.

I was as shocked along with everyone else at Tommy's untimely death. He had just called me a couple week ago to convince me to get in the truck for a trip down to the Blue Note. " Jesus Christ Owen, Cassandra Wilson!!!" Now I feel ridiculous for telling him I had to work. He was an extraordinary person. Naturally charismatic and always fun to be around. You never knew what he would do next. Irreplaceable in my heart.
