North Lawrence – Winfred E. "Winnie" Simpson, Sr., 79, passed away Friday evening (December 19, 2014) in the loving comfort his home. Arrangements are entrusted to the Hammill Funeral Home in Winthrop.
Born on June 24, 1935, Winfred is the son of the late Joseph and Maudie (Towers) Simpson. After graduating from St. Lawrence Central School in 1953, he enlisted in the US Marine Corps, during the Korean War and received his honorable discharge at the rank of Sergeant. On September 27, 1958, he married Shirley R. Cook at St. Lawrence Church in North Lawrence. They shared 56 years of a dedicated union.
Winfred retired from General Motors in 2000, after 40 years of employment. He worked in the die cast unit for many years. He loved the outdoors, spending time in his garden, playing horseshoes and watching birds. As a sports enthusiast, his interests included football and NASCAR. He found peace and tranquility in his home with his faithful companion, Becker at his side. Endowed with a sense of humor, he knew how to tease others provoking their laughter but he also had a serious love for his family that they all knew in their hearts.
His love will forever remain with his wife, Shirley; his children, Winfred and Huguette Simpson, Jr. of St. Regis Falls, Joy Sebring and Stephen Simpson, both of Massena, Penny, address unknown, Kyle Simpson of Germany, Jody and Ann Simpson of North Lawrence, and Mary Ellen "Cissy" and Todd Hayes of Louisville; one sister, Nancy and Robert Pierce of Middleport; 16 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by two sisters, Mary Ellen Arno and Joyce French.
Following Winfred's wishes, his family will honor his life privately.
