Brushton - Bernard M. Richards, 83, passed away Friday December 26, 2014 at the University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington. Arrangements are entrusted to the Hammill Funeral Home in Winthrop.
Bernard was born on August 29, 1931 in Dickinson, son of the late Donald W. and Beatrice (Jesmer) Richards and received his education in St. Regis Falls. He married Maureen Caskinette in 1951. She predeceased him in 1965. He married Cynthia M. Hartson on October 26, 1991, sharing a joyous ride for 23 years.
Bernie was a farmer for 42 years; raising top NYS Holsteins, showing his bulls at the county fair, also selling Clay Equipment and DeLavelle Dairy Equipment. After he retired from farming, he started his hobby business of "Backhoe Bernie", providing service to his customers with his familiar smile. He refurbished tractors and enjoyed the tractor pull competitions. An outdoorsman; he found a calming as he cut his wood, produced his maple syrup, hunted, fished, 4-wheeled and snowmobiled. He was always tuned into his location in the woods, earning him the nickname of "Mr. Adirondacks." He was an athlete at heart whose competitive nature showed as he played golf, hockey, broomball, basketball and bowling.
He was a past member of the Moira Fire Department, a member of the Best Hunting Club in Meacham Lake and a communicant of St. Mary's Church in Brushton.
Bernie was a peaceful man, kindhearted, humble and always helpful to those in need. He met challenges with a little humor, his great wit left others with a smile. His ability as a handyman was shown as he could fix anything and enjoyed to teach by example. Bernie was a hardworking, generous man who loved his family and treasured their time spent together.
He is survived by his wife, Cynthia; children, Debbie and Ted Hintopoulos of Hannawa Falls, Martha Jane Moore of Dade City, FL, Bonnie and Steve Mace and Debbie and Gary Gravelle, of FL, son in law, Kenneth and Maria Swakopf of Raleigh; siblings, Dorothy Jandrew of Nicholville, Winona and Lionel Marshall of Moira, Philip Richards of Orchard Park, Donna Chambers of Winthrop; 16 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by one daughter Virginia, one sister, Reba Lemieux and one brother, Andrew.
Visitation will be held Monday at the Hammill Funeral Home in Winthrop from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm. Bernard's Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday at 11 am at St. Mary's Church in Brushton. Spring burial will be in St. Ann's Cemetery in St. Regis Falls.

Dearest Cindy,
I went home for the first time in seven years for Christmas. The Tall Pines was beautiful when I arrived. My Christmas gift to Dad, Eleanor and Chris is the annual DVD and candy for the family to watch together each year. This year however I had a little something special planned. I took Mommy's VHS tapes, "The History of the Tall Pines" volumes one and two and had DVD's created. On December 27, 2014 I started the show and who do we see...Bernie! That was when they were building the garage, making the driveway and Bernie pulling Dad out of a ditch when he buried Bernie's equipment. You know Mom never missed much with that video camera. At one point Dad and Bernie were sitting at the end of the dock and there you were with a tray of beverages serving the boys after a big day. When Dad called and said Bernie passed away all I could see was his beautiful smile and how much he meant to Mom, Dad and all of us. I love you Cindy! I will call you very soon. Ceil daughter of Ann

Dear Cindy,
It is my belief that when someone passes, the spirit that enlivens a body departs from this mortal shell called the body. The mortal body is placed into a grave, but the spirit lives on and is taken home to that God who gave him life, and is received into a state of happiness, which is called paradise, a state of rest from pain and worldly care and sorrows,a state of peace and happiness.
Your dear Bernie is there in that happy environment surrounded by all those dearly departed family members and friends who have gone ahead. They all gathered at his arrival and welcomed him with warm embraces and tears of joy.
Bernie loves you very much. He will continue to watch over you. He will be your guardian angel. You will feel him close to you, especially when you need to feel his influence and his prayers. He will be there for you.
I am thinking of you and remember you in my prayers. ...Love, Linda

My dear Grandpa Bernie...a remarkable man. From the time I was born until I was 13, I spent every summer on the farm with him & Grandma (Jolene). I learned a lot from Grandpa, but mostly that farming is very hard work. Other fun things I learned: always hollar when you turn on the silo to drop feed; bottle feeding a calf; milking a cow; how to cut, rake & bale hay; always carry a big stick when you are bringing in the cattle; how to install a milking system; how to play shuffleboard & drive a 4 wheeler; how to be calm when a curious kid sends a whole day of milk down the drain because she forget to turn off the bulk tank when she went to get milk (oops)...all wonderful memories. Mostly, be a good person & people will be good to you. He always had patience with me. Today, I am a small animal veterinarian, but I know my days on the farm helped mold me into the person I am.
Grandpa will be dearly missed by me & my family, my brother & my mother.
Love & prayers,
Stephanie Mace Kennedy

Our deepest condolences and sympathies to you and Bernard's extended family.
He was a unique individual, with a great sense of humor and a pleasure to play golf with. We will miss him truly and it was our distinct pleasure to have played softball and to known him as a friend.
May he travel the journey to the next life with the knowledge of having so many close friends, who will miss him dearly.
