Massena - Joseph J. DeFilippo, 61, passed away Monday, April 20, 2015, at home under the loving care of his family. Arrangements are entrusted to Hammill Funeral Home in Winthrop.
Joseph was born on July 17, 1953 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, son of the late Dominic and Mary (Nuzzo) DeFilippo. He attended Graham Junior College in Boston. He was known in Boston as The Charles Street Troubadour in the 70's. Joe's first marriage to Arlene Weinstein, produced two girls, and ended in divorce. Joe and Arlene maintained a lifelong friendship. A second marriage to Janice Schnetzler, brought a son and a daughter, but also ended in divorce. He met Nancy Rood, a coworker at a limo company in NH. Joe moved to NNY in 1989 to be with Nancy. They got married in Massena at the Andrews Street Park in the gazebo on December 7, 2002. They shared a loving, devoted union, built on respect for each other.
Joe's life revolved around music; if he wasn't playing or songwriting, he was helping other musicians get their music heard. He founded WildCat Recording USA in 1993, getting many of his friend's music released.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy; four children, Rachel Weinstein of Far Rockaway, Ruthanna Weinstein-Robinson of Portsmouth, NH, Michael DeFilippo and Marina DeFilippo, both of Epping, NH; five grandchildren; and many friends.
Following his wishes, there will be no calling hours but a Gathering to Celebrate his Life will be held at a later date and will be announced.
Memories and condolences can be shared with his family at www.hammilfh.com.

I was a good friend of Joe's at Graham Jr. College. I've been trying to get back in touch with him for many years and just ran across this. I'm shocked and so sad. Joe was such a great friend. We played coffeehouses in Boston back in the day. I'm so sorry we lost touch. Prayers and thoughts. Bourbon in the turban. Love You.

My deepest condolences to Nancy. You guys were one of the best matched and finest couples I have ever known, with such great love and respect for one another. I have no doubt that you will be together again one day, for all of eternity. Much love, Nancy...and Joe, I hope you are having a blast up there, playing music with all of your friends. Save us all seats at the bar, will ya?

We have many treasured memories of Joe; he was truly a giver. Joe gave us many CD's of his WildCat artists, and our conversations about music were funny and enlightening. We first met Joe at a gig The Joe Phillips Band performed at The Liberty in 1993! Our friendship continued years later at many "Happy Hours" at Charlie's Tavern on Fridays. We looked forward to seeing Joe wheel in on his cool bicycle and would get into discussions from world events to Massena Topix to our "animal children"! Joe's keen wit and knowledge of life were refreshing and limitless. He is an Old Soul and his vibe will resonate through many lives for many Moons to come. Our wishes for peace and encouragement go out to his beloved Nancy and his family members. "......And in the End, the LOVE you take is equal to the LOVE you make" is Joe's legacy. Shine on!
