Mildred Frary Hazen died peacefully May 12, 2015 surrounded by loving family members. She is survived by three sons, Philip of Essex Junction, VT, John “Jack” and his wife, Patricia, of Clarkston, Michigan, and David and his wife, Louise, of Raleigh, North Carolina; three daughters, Jane Dyke and her husband, Warren, of Colton, NY; Ruth Sargent and her husband, Dale, of Chazy, NY and Gina Hazen of Potsdam, NY; fourteen grandchildren; and eighteen great-grandchildren. Mildred was predeceased by four brothers, Howard, Milton, Gerald and Irvin Frary; and one sister, Ruth, in infancy. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews who often visited and stayed in touched. Mrs. Hazen was born on June 10, 1914 in the Town of Lawrence, the daughter of Milo Frary and Carrie Hanley Frary. She graduated from Brushton High School and received a teaching degree from Potsdam Normal School. After graduation, she began her career in a one-room school house just outside of Nicholville. Her teaching career spanned 31 years with breaks for raising children and with her final years at Brushton-Moira Schools. Mildred fondly remembered her students, many of whom corresponded and visited her throughout her life. Mildred married Harold Hazen on July 13, 1940 at the United Methodist Church in Potsdam with Rev. Richardson officiating. They began their married life in North Lawrence and eventually moved just outside Nicholville to live on their farm. Continuing to raise her family at the farmhouse, she enjoyed other activities such as snowmobiling, golfing and bowling. Some of the fondest memories of her family are gatherings at their home on 11B and making maple syrup. After the death of her husband on August 30, 1993 she moved to Potsdam where she lived until just after her 100th birthday. As a widow, Mildred, an avid reader, continued to golf, bowl, and create beautiful quilts, ensuring each child, grandchild and great-grandchild had at least one. Her treasured quilts were also made for many friends. Mildred touched the lives of so many people and her family appreciates the over one hundred people who sent her cards on her 100th birthday, and visited her when family was away. Family treated her to many car rides and ice cream cones until as recently as this past Saturday. It is not to go unnoted that Mrs. Hazen had a love of cars and one of her fondest memories is purchasing her first car at the age of 21, a 1935 Ford. Mildred would go on to own many cars and had a fond appreciation for Mercury’s, Buicks, and Cadillacs She loved long Sunday rides, hearing her husband and children sing in the car and while she gave up driving a few years ago, she had a driver’s license still current until her death.
