Obituary of Grace L. Slate

Ogdensburg- Mrs. Grace L. Slate, 86, passed away at the Riverledge Nursing Home on Sunday August 16, 2015. Arrangements are entrusted to Hammill Funeral Home in Winthrop. Grace was born in Canton on October 8, 1928 to the late Lee and Aura (Streeter) Potter. She was raised and educated locally, attending a number of schools depending on where the family was farming at the time. A marriage to Harvey Slate, who predeceased Grace, ended in divorce. She worked for many years at the Samaritan Keep Nursing Home in Watertown, retiring in 1990. In earlier years, Grace enjoyed watching her favorite TV shows, and found peace and solace in bird watching. She loved traveling, especially the 3 cruises she was able to take, and always had to have her country music playing. All though Grace never had any children of her own, she cherished her nieces and nephews as if they were and truly enjoyed any time spent with family. Just a few months ago she was overjoyed to be able to share in the most recent family reunion. She is survived by her nieces and nephews; Phillip and Joan Burnett of Rensselaer Falls, Diane McCready and Elaine Welch of Watertown, Susan White of Ft. Jackson, Jerry Burnett of Brasher Falls, Michael Burnett of Massena, and Keith Burnett of Garland TX., brother and sister-in-law, Harold Potter of Massena and Edna Potter of Potsdam. She was predeceased by 2 sisters, Mary Burnett and Margaret “Peggy” Burns, and 2 brothers, Richard Potter and Leslie Potter. Visitation will be Wednesday from 10-11 at the funeral home. Grace’s Funeral Service and Celebration of Life will commence upon conclusion of visitation Wednesday. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Brasher Falls. For those wishing to express an act of kindness, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of St. Lawrence Valley.
