Brasher Falls - Mabel A. Newton, 98, passed away peacefully Saturday, August 22, 2015 at the St. Regis Nursing Home with the prayers and love of her family at her bedside. Arrangements are entrusted to the Hammill Funeral Home in Winthrop.
Mabel was born on December 17, 1916 in Brasher, daughter of the late Frank and Mary (Watters) LaBrake and graduated from Brasher-Stockholm High School. She married Merwyn G. Newton at St. Phillip's Church Rectory on April 4, 1941 with Rev. Leon F. Haley officiating. They shared a 54 year union, dedicating themselves to their wedding vows and their family, a true example to live by. Mr. Newton passed away on April 27, 1995.
Mabel was a giving person; to her family and her community. She was a member of the Stockholm Historical Society, the Stockholm Republican Club and served as a Election Inspector for the Town of Stockholm. Her life was guided by her strong faith, and her church community at St. Phillip's Episcopal Church in Norwood, serving as strong cornerstones. She loved gathering with her family and friends, creating memories for a lifetime.
She is survived by one son and daughter in law, Robert and Gloria Newton of Norwood, one daughter and son in law, Marlene and Richard Burnett of North Lawrence, four grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. She was the last sibling of the LaBrake family, being predeceased by one sister, Margaret Bryant and five brothers, Phillip, Lewis, Edmund, George and Joe. Sadly she was also predeceased by two grandsons, Devin Waite and Nathan Marriott.
Visitation will be held Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 at the Hammill Funeral Home in Winthrop. Funeral services will be Thursday at 11 am at the funeral home, followed by burial in Winthrop Cemetery.
Those wishing to express an act of kindness, please consider donations in her honor to Tri Town Rescue Squad, P. O. Box 238, Brasher Falls, NY 13613.

Marlene, Richard, Bob & Gloria and families,
Our hearts are with you during this very difficult time. I am greatly saddened and will miss my Aunt immensely, but know she had a good life and is now at peace. May the cherished memories of your Mom/Mother-In-Law/Grandmother bring you comfort and continued traditions to pass on to your children and grandchildren. Aunt Mabel was always good to me and I feel badly I won't be able to be with you at this time, but I will be with you in heart and prayer. My love always.

Bob and Marlene, please accept my deepest sympathy at this difficult time of your mother's passing. I remember both of your parents, living just down the street. I can still picture them and both of you, all as fine people as I've known.
All my best
Ray Richardson
