Winthrop- Mr. Charles William Hartson, 83, passed away unexpectedly on December 16, 2015. Arrangements are entrusted to Hammill Funeral Home in Winthrop.
Charlie was born in Winthrop on March 26, 1932, son of the late Maynard and Clara (Tower) Hartson. He was raised and educated locally, graduating from Brasher-Stockholm high school. Charlie served in the US Air Force from 1952-56 and thereafter married his beloved wife, Beverly Ann Dibble in Petersburg, NY on November 3. They shared a unique loving union of 35 years until the time of Beverly's passing on January 1, 1992.
After serving in the Air Force, Chuck worked as a job setter, welder, and later as a truck driver for General Motors for nearly 30 years. He also enjoyed driving logging truck for several of his friends.
Charlie is survived by his two daughters: Dawn Hewlett and her husband Pat Hewlett of Potsdam, Kathy Eggleson of Potsdam, and ex son-in-law, William Eggleson of Canton; his sister, Ruthie Garvey of Winthrop; 6 granddaughters: Nichole Galusha-Troicke and her husband Andrew Troicke, Anna Galusha, Jayne Galusha and her companion Brad Ryan, Aleasha Hartson and her companion Kenny Charleson, Brittany Hartson, and Mackenzie Hartson; 2 grandsons: Joe Galusha and Charles T. "Chuckie" Hartson; 4 great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, and cousins; and his second family John and Amy Fraser of St. Regis Falls.
Besides his parents and wife, he was predeceased by a son Charles Wayne Hartson, and his brothers, Clayton, Clyde, Malcolm, and Carlton Hartson.
Chuck was rarely idle, he loved to spend his days driving around the North Country visiting friends, eating at his favorite dinners, and enjoying the beautiful scenery. His compassion and sense of humor were adored by many and he will be greatly missed.
Visitation will be Saturday from 2-4 and 6-8 at the funeral home. Charlie's Funeral Service and Celebration of Life will be Sunday at 11:00am at the funeral home with Certified Celebrant Julia O'Brien. Burial will follow at Southville Cemetery. Please accept our sincere condolences on your loss. I worked with Charlie at General Motors for years and was known to him and others as "the wart welder." In fact, he was the only one who still refers to me as "Wart." He will be sorely missed by all of those people who knew him.
