Obituary of Meryl C. Niles

St. Regis Falls - Meryl C. Niles passed away Tuesday evening at his home in St. Regis Falls. A long time resident of the area he was born in Dickinson Center, on March 22, 1913 the son of Cordon and Rachel (Ploof) Niles. Mr. Niles was educated through the local rural school in Dickinson Center. On December 4, 1942, he joined the United States Army. He courageously fought for our country during World War II, being honorably discharged December 9, 1945. Mr. Niles married Mary Gonyea in 1933, she predeceased him in 1956. Later he married Mary Knowles in 1964, and she passed away in 1989. At one time he owned and operated a small garage in Canton, later moving back to St. Regis Falls. Meryl will be remembered as a quiet man, one with few words; however he loved going for car rides with his cousins, Marjorie Caron and Rita Haynes. He is survived by many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He is predeceased by two sisters and three brothers. Evelyn Collins, Manfred Niles, Chester Niles, Richard Niles, and Margaret (Hourihan) Dumas. Memorial Contributions in his honor may be made locally to the St. Regis Falls Adult Center. A graveside service will be held Tuesday July 6, 2010 at 11:00 A.M in Mound Hill Cemetery, Nicholville, with the Pastor Lee Sweeney presiding.
