Dorothy Agnes Flynn Elliott, age 93, of Winthrop and Higley Flow, Colton, NY peacefully passed away on August 24, 2016 at Maplewood Skilled Nursing Facility, Canton, NY.
Arrangements are entrusted to Hammill Funeral Home in Winthrop.
Dorothy was born November 2, 1922 in Norwood, NY to Pearl Kimball Flynn and James Flynn.
August 13, 1946 she married Baker Leroy Elliott in the Norwood St. Andrew's Catholic Church Rectory with the Rev. Daniel Liddy officiating. Honor attendants were Ellen Hickey Simonette and F. Rolland Simonette.
She is survived by her grateful and loving family: husband Baker, daughter Cindy (John) Niles, son Bob (Bonnie) Elliott, and daughter Barbara (Brian) Lee. Dorothy is also survived by grandchildren: Adria (Amy Pennington) Lee, Brigitte (Ben) Snell (children: Flynn, Abe, Lane), Candy Arquiett, Melissa Lee, Scott (Leigh) Arquiett (children: Jesse, Madison), and Tina Arquiett (children: Brandon, Bonita). She is also survived by sister-in-law Marilyn (Bill) Elliott Rodee (children: Leslie [Steve] Hooper, Terri [Doug] Knuth, Elliott [Mary]) Rodee, and niece Patti (Rick) Flynn Gibson, nephew Jim (Ed) Flynn, and grand niece Kelly (Geoff) Flynn Gibson Dietrich. Dorothy was predeceased by brothers Robert, Leo, Bernard, and sister Marie Flynn.
In 1940 Dorothy graduated from Norwood High School. She completed one year of nursing at Ogdensburg's Hepburn Hospital School of Nursing before returning home to care for her mother. In 1943 she graduated from the Watertown School of Commerce, working then in Massena's Alcoa Mechanical and Chemical Engineering Departments through 1946.
Dorothy enjoyed painting and had the privilege to study watercolor under Robert Plumb. She also later worked with acrylics. Her family proudly enjoyed her work displayed in local art shows. She was a longtime Norwood Village Library Trustee and enjoyed Bridge. At home Dorothy enjoyed crocheting, and crafts. Cats were beloved by Dorothy as was entertaining family and friends every summer at her Higley Flow home. Wintertime was filled with the snowmobiling and warm fireside nights that she and Baker so enjoyed.
Family was the axis around which Dorothy's life turned. Growing up in an extended Irish family of ten aunts and uncles, she became known for her generosity and compassion. Of her many accomplishments, she was proudest of the family she built and nurtured. The Girl and Boy Scouts, 4H, Junior Catholic Daughters, Horse Shows, and innumerable school activities all benefitted from her supportive presence.
Her peaceful, patient demeanor, her endless curiosity, and her gracious acceptance of cultural changes that she witnessed through her long life will always be treasured by those whose lives she welcomed and shaped. In attitude and action, Dorothy embodied the Beatitude "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God."
Dorothy was a communicant of St. Andrew's Catholic Church in Norwood, St. Patrick's in Colton, St. Patrick's in Brasher Falls, and most recently St. Mary's in Canton.
Calling hours will be held at the Hammill Funeral Home in Winthrop, NY from 10 AM to noon Saturday, September 24 with a Memorial Service at noon.
Burial will be in the family plot in St. Andrew's Catholic Cemetery, Norwood at the family's convenience.

RIP Dorothy. The Elliott family was a key to my making a career in the banking field in Winthrop. Could not find nicer people, salt of the earth and Dorothy always had a kind smile.

We add our condolence to the family of Dorothy Elliott, a lady of dignity and grace. She was a person that exemplified the role of wife, mother, and community citizen to those that were fortunate to share a portion of their lives with her. The diversity of her interests and social interactions will serve as an example to many on how to live a full and productive life.

Our condolences go out to Mr. Elliott and his family. Mrs. Elliott was one of the community Moms who raised us when we grew up in Norwood. She always made us welcome in the Elliott home on Depot Street, where on Saturday afternoons Bob and his grandfather hosted the crew for the televised wrestling matches.

I offer my condolences to the Elliott family for the loss of Dorothy. I did not know her well, but admired her graceful presence. She was a lovely person, and a wonderful friend to my sister Peg Kingsley. She lived a good long life and I know you will all miss her.

Heaven has truly gained a beautiful angel with Dottie's passing.
Higley and Baker and Dottie go hand in hand. Neighbors for over 50 years, friends forever.
A smile, a kind word or wave from their chairs, a wonderful story, or a mini-history lesson about Higley.
We will think of her each spring and fall when the bufflehead ducks stop by on their migration route. Thanks to Dottie we learned their names.
Prayers and thoughts to all the Elliot family.
Sincerely , Jerry & Carol Sharp Family
