Obituary of Leonard C. Montroy

Brasher Falls- Mr. Leonard C. Montroy Sr., 83, peacefully passed away on Monday February 27, 2017 at his son and daughter-in-laws home surrounded by the support and care of his family and hospice. Arrangements have been entrusted to Hammill Funeral Home in Winthrop. Leonard was born in Massena on October 19, 1933 to the late Barney A. and Susie K. (McGovern) Montroy. He was raised and educated locally, graduating from St. Lawrence Central High School. Leonard proudly served his country in the United States Air Force from 1952-55. After his honorable discharge, Leonard married Sarah B. Hightower on December 7, 1955 in Georgia. They shared a devoted union of 59 years until the time of Sarah’s passing on January 28, 2015. For 30 years Leonard worked at Reynolds Metals in Massena, in the pot rooms and then as a foreman in the cast house; where he was known by all as “Lenny Montroy”. He was also a member of the United Steelworkers Union. In earlier years he enjoyed bowling, hunting and fishing. Leonard was also a skilled craftsman who took pleasure in woodwork, spending time in the shop with his son Leonard Jr. He is survived by 2 daughters and a son-in-law: Ramona and Chris Binan of Parishville, and Rachael Montroy of Cape Coral, FL; his son and daughter-in-law, Leonard C. and Penny Montroy Jr. of Brasher Falls; his grandchildren: Jason Montroy, Jackson Binan, Gabrielle Barbeau, Jennifer Barbeau, Tonya Cole, Derek Montroy, and Kyle Montroy; 9 great-grandchildren; a sister, Clara Burke of Canton, and a brother, Calvin D. Montroy of Sumiton, AL.; survivors also include many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Besides his wife and parents, Leonard was predeceased by his brothers: Carlton, Charles A., Patrick, Clarence W., Bernard “Joe”, Clifford, and Clayton A. Montroy; and his daughter, Rebecca L. Montroy who passed away on October 8, 2012. Calling hours will be Friday evening from 6 to 8pm and Saturday from 11am-1pm. Leonard’s Funeral Service and Celebration of Life will be Saturday March 4th at 1:00pm at the conclusion of calling hours, with Certified Celebrant Julia O’Brien.
