North Lawrence - Mary A. (Burns)Cook, 60, passed away Tuesday, June 13, 2017 at Massena Memorial Hospital. Arrangements are entrusted to the Hammill Funeral Home in Winthrop.
Mary was born on December 15, 1956 in Malone, daughter of the late Michael J. and Edelgard E. (Vogelgesang) Burns. She went to St. Lawrence Central School and worked for her family at Burns Groceries in North Lawrence until it closed. She worked at Super Duper in Massena as Bakery Manager until 1988 and worked at The Jug in North Lawrence as bartender until 2002; then worked at the North Lawrence Supermarket until she fell ill in 2005. Mary always kept busy; sewing, hemming and repairs; baking, decorating cakes and making pies; cooking for big family dinners, known for having the best gravy; gardening - vegetables and flowers, with lilac's being her favorite to pick. She enjoyed scratching lottery tickets, always buying from the winners, but assumed something was wrong if she didn't win. Mary had a unique love for animals, feeding feral stray cats, feeding them better then she ate. When they had kittens, she made her kids find them and she would hand feed them. Her two dogs, Little Bits and Tinker and two cats, Muffin and Smudge could always be seen by her side.
At one time Mary was married to Richard Cook and blessed with two children, Kerry and Bobbi. A relationship with David McLaughlin was blessed with a daughter, Katrina. Mary worked hard to raise her children. They were the light of her life and she adored them. She always made everyone feel like family and will be remembered for the love she gave those she met.
Surviving Mary are her children; Kerry and Ronald Reome, Jr. of Massena, Katrina McLaughlin and Kevin Sellers of North Lawrence, Bobbi Russell and Bud Kemison of Massena, her siblings; John and Connie Burns of Hopkinton, Rita and James McCuin of North Lawrence, Bonnie and Charles Morrissette of Cornwall, Ontario, Tina and Larry Foley of North Lawrence, six grandchildren; Ashlyn Russell, Ronald Reome, III, Dazy Russell, Haley Reome, Owen Russell and Quinnton Kemison, four step-grandchildren; Kyle McLaughlin, Johnny Clark, Garrett Clark and Leeann Clark, many nieces and nephews. Mary was predeceased by one sister, Rosalee Cheney in Jan. 1978 and David McLaughlin.
Visitation will be held Sunday from 5 to 8 pm at the Hammill Funeral Home in Winthrop. Mary's Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday at 11 am at St. Lawrence Church in North Lawrence. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery in North Lawrence.
