William was born on June 7, 1947 in Malone, son of the late Verness and Pauline (Harwood) Woodward. He taught English for several years at Antwerp then went to ALCOA in Massena, where he retired as an electrician. In 1977, William married Kathleen Aiken. They companioned each other through 21 years together, raising their children. The marriage ended in 1998, but the friendship remained.
He enjoyed the outdoors, especially his sandpit, but would relax reading classic novels, jigsaw puzzles and solitaire. He loved spending time with his children, and at one time they devoted time together in snow sculpturing.

Besides his parents, one sister, Nancy Woodward, predeceased him.
Visitation will be held Saturday from 4 to 6 pm at the Hammill Funeral Home in St. Regis Falls, with his funeral service at 6 pm.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in his memory can be made to the Dickinson Volunteer Fire Department, Dickinson Center, NY 12930.
