I would like to give Cheryl and Tom's family my best. I worked with Tom at Alcoa for many years and enjoyed him at work because he was always on the upbeat. Always was a pleasure to be around; especially when you worked 10 hour days at a time it was nice to have someone on the upbeat even though most of you were tired. My condolences to the family.

What a shocker. Just found this out today. Don’t know how I missed it. Tom was one of a kind. Great boss. Very, very smart and kind. Lived life with enthusiasm. Worked extremely hard for Alcoa. It’s extremely sad he did not get to enjoy a lot of life after retirement. His boys should be extremely proud of their father. Always making people laugh.

Tom was a unique and awesomely zany individual who was guided by his own star. He loved his sons; he did great metallurgical work, loved the lakes and rivers of New York State and Michigan; he will be remembered for cooking from his garden, taking photos, making dull videos, and defying authority.

I was so greatly saddened to hear the news of Tom's passing. He was my manager at my first job out of college - and he really took a chance on me. I learned so much from him as a young metallurgist, not just about aluminum and fabrication processes, but also how to interact positively with others and deliver large projects.
Tom always injected humor and warmth into everything he did. No matter how frustrated or down I was feeling, Tom always found the right words to cheer me up and keep me motivated. He had a passion for many things - hiking, sailing, science, metallurgy and especially his children. No one displayed his love and commitment to his boys more than Tom - and as I raised my daughters I often thought of that beautiful commitment and relationship.
I remember one January, for my performance review, Tom decided we weren't going to sit in a stuffy office and read through boring forms - we were going to head to Whiteface mountain for an "offsite meeting." He told me to pack my skiis in the car the next day and we would head to the mountain. It was a great day of skiing and an important lesson not to take life to seriously. Once we were both relaxed on the trip home, he gave me my rating and told me I needed to work on carving my turns a little more next year! That was Tom in a nutshell: brilliant, warm, supportive and humorous all rolled into one.
I will miss you, old friend, and wish your family peace and comfort in your passing.

I am so sorry to hear about this news. I've known Tom since he started working for Alcoa in Davenport. I recruited him at Michigan Tech. We shared many of the same passions such as skiing, enjoying the outdoors, photography of the U.P. and Iowa fall colors and winter scenes. He never did get me to crawl through caves though. The picture is from the early years of work there. Based on the prior messages, it's clear he had many co-workers who admired him not only for the professional relationship, but his great sense of humor and positive outlook on life.
He will be missed.

I worked with Tom several years ago and have very fond memories of him. He taught me a lot about metallurgy and did it with a great sense of humor.
May his memory be a blessing.

Tom and I both worked as metallurgists in the Quality Assurance Department of Alcoa's West Plant in Massena , NY .Tom was my supervisor in the late 80's when I was the Wire Mill metallurgist .In 2001 when I returned to Massena from an Alcoa plant in Delhi, LA as Quality Assurance Manager in Wire, Rod & Bar Tom held a similar position in the Casthouse.
It is sad to learn of Tom;s passing at I such a young age. I remember Tom being the picture of health when we met while hiking the Adiroundack High Peak trails.
Tom was a smart and dedicated metallurgist who did much to help keep the Massena plan open. He helped develop several new alloys and was granted patens for doing so. I heard that his expertise was
really missed when he retired.(I retired in 2007)
I extend my condolences to Tom's sons and the rest of his family.

Well Tom it had been a few years since our paths have crossed but back in the day we did kick up our heals and raise a little hell. Always fun when you skied up to the house in Potsdam. Too many stories to go through but rest well old friend. Peace, love and joy on the other side.

While at ATC in the mid-90's I had the pleasure of supporting the Massena folks. Flying up on Wednesdays on the corporate jet, including on the coldest day in Pittsburgh history. Loved spending time with Tom in particular, welcomed his insights, and laughed at his sense of humor. As others have said, he was truly one of the good ones, gone to soon, and will be missed.

I am saddened to learn of Tom’s passing. I enjoyed working with Tom at Alcoa, having a beer or two with him at Charlie’s or bashing through the woods in some out of bounds area of Smugglers, Jay Peak or Whiteface.
Tom’s sometimes quirky sense of humor will be missed as will his concern for others. Whenever we talked, he first wanted to know how my wife Barb and my children were doing. In my book, Tom was one of the good guys.

I have been deeply saddened by the news since I heard on Friday - first emotionless, then frustrated, and today focusing on remembering him for the great person that he was. Tom was brilliant, passionate, and exuberant. He was always willing to help me when I first came to Massena. Whether it be a metallurgical issue, or choosing a hiking trail for the weekend. And he was always that way for others in the almost 25 years I have known him. And that is how I will remember him.
Fair winds and following seas my friend.

Tom was a great friend, sailer, skier and metallurgist. I worked with him for many years. I learned so much from him - he truly was on of the top metallurgists in Alcoa. His knowledge of hard alloy rod and bar was unsurpassed - he had seen it all and learned from all the problems that he encountered. He was a pretty good skier - but Nic Doyan was the best of the metallurgists at Alcoa. I have a great picture of a met ski day (staff meeting) at Whiteface Mountain. Tom mentored lots of metallurgists - Jim Samuel, Jim Olszewski, Nic Doyan, Walt Mulyca - the list goes on. He wanted you to know the why as well as the how of a problem - and this led to a great learning environment. Tom will always be my "yardstick" for a great metallurgist and friend.
