Obituary of Richard M. Kirkey
Brasher Falls- Mr. Richard “Red” M. Kirkey, 89, passed away on Friday June 29, 2018 in the comfort of his home. Arrangements have been entrusted to Hammill Funeral Home in Winthrop.
Richard was born in Massena on August 31, 1928 to the late Joseph and Julia (Lizette) Kirkey. He graduated from Massena High School where he played football and baseball. Afterwards he was drafted into the US Army where he served in the Korean War; being honorably discharged in 1952.
For many years, Red worked as a service man for National Grid.
On October 24, 1953 he married the love of his life, Collette M. Charette. They shared a blessed union together built upon a strong belief in faith and a true love and respect for each other. Collette passed away on February 14, 2007, and he has missed her greatly ever since.
Richard and Collette were faithful parishioners and supporters of St. Lawrence Parish in North Lawrence; where Mr. Kirkey especially loved listening to his beloved play the organ.
Red loved where he lived on the Deer River, its peaceful setting and the wildlife; traveling around the Haggart and Cotter Road on what he lovingly named the ‘Pope Mobile’ to see his neighbors whom he favored and loved, especially when they wanted to hear a good story. He often ended his day with his evening snap while watching western movies and eating his favorite chocolates.
Richard is survived by his good friends Teena and Gerald Prentice and their children Tara and Jacob of Massena; his step-grandchildren: Shelby Ramsdell, Candice Sweeney, and Randy Murphy; his step great-grandchildren whom were his pride and joy; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Always in his heart is the memory of his family who predeceased him; especially: his infant daughter Mary, son, Joseph R. Kirkey and his twin brother Robert J. Kirkey.
Visitation will be held Thursday July 5th from 2 – 5 PM at the Hammill Funeral Home in Winthrop.
Richard’s Funeral Service and Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday July 6th at 9:30 AM at St. Lawrence Church in North Lawrence followed by Military Honors.
