Obituary of Joe Murray

Winthrop- Mr. David “Joe” Murray, 74, passed away Thursday March 7, 2019 in the comfort of his home surrounded by his loving family. Arrangements have been entrusted to Hammill Funeral Home in Winthrop

Joe was born in Brookdale on January 4, 1945 to the late George and Wilda Dillabough Murray, graduating from St. Lawrence Central High School in Brasher Falls. For a short time, he worked at an air brake factory in Watertown where he also enjoyed racing cars.

For over 30 years Joe worked as an operator in the pot rooms at Reynolds Metals Co. in Massena up until the time of his retirement.

Joe was an avid hunter and enjoyed fishing. He was always keeping busy tinkering and working on something, never staying idle for long. Joe and Sylvia worked as team to keep their lawn and gardens in pristine shape. Family meant the world to Joe and he cherished time spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife for over 35 years, Sylvia Snyder; children: Victoria Snyder and her fiancé John Clark, David Murray Jr. and his companion Myra LaFrance, Tracy and Gene Goodreau, William “Bill” Murray, Darrell and Ashley Snyder, Dawn Duckwitz, and Scott Snyder; blessed with many grandchildren and great grandchildren; a brother and sister-in-law, Mark and Susan Murray; brothers and sisters-in-law: Jean Murray, Mark and Vickie Crump, James Crump, Donald Crump, and Lilly and Sonny Gonyea; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Besides his parents Joe was predeceased by his brothers Donald, and Gary, sister, Linda Folsom, a sister Martha Lyons and a brother Marvin who passed in infancy, and a grandson, Ezekiel James Murray. 

Calling hours will be Friday March 15, from 2 – 5PM at the funeral home. Joe’s Funeral Service and Memorial Gathering will follow at 5:00PM. Memorial contributions can be made in Joe’s honor to Hospice and Palliative Care of St. Lawrence Valley Inc.
