Ogdensburg - Mahlon J. Parr, 82, formerly of Massena and Winthrop, passed away Friday August 14, 2015 at his home in Ogdensburg. Arrangements are entrusted to Hammill Funeral Home in Winthrop.
Mahlon was born in Stockholm on May 8, 1933, son of the late Maurice S. and Edna F. (Fay) Parr. He graduated from high school. He entered the U. S. Army, served during the Korean War as a Morse Code Interpreter, and was discharged in 1956. He went on to college to receive his Masters in Education while he worked at St. Lawrence Central School as a bus driver. He took a position as a math teacher, and after several years, he went back to driving bus. Mahlon worked his way up and earned the position of Transportation Supervisor, a position he retired from.
He was very content with a simple non-complicated life. He had a strong work ethic and was a gentleman in the truest sense of the word. Mahlon was a communicant of St. Patrick Church in Brasher Falls, Sacred heart Church in Massena and St. Mary's Cathedral in Ogdensburg; wherever he lived, he held deep spiritual values in his Catholic faith.
He is survived by his 3rd cousin, Timothy and Joan Parr of Maryland and many friends.
Visitation will be Monday morning from 9:30 to 10:30 at the Hammill Funeral Home in Winthrop. Mahlon's Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 am at St. Patrick Church in Brasher Falls, followed by burial in the parish cemetery, next to his parents.

What a kind and gentle soul. I'll always remember riding by his Stockholm residence and seeing a plane parked outside and thinking how cool that was. He carried on a friendship with my father well after we graduated SLC. Sorry for your loss.

Mr. Parr was the best bus driver ever. He was always so incredibly patient and made each one of us feel special. Every holiday, he passed out candy to us. He was such an example of holiness and goodness. May he rest in peace in God's arms.

Under the quiet and sincere person was a special sense of humor that was a blessing when Mahlon
would make a 'funny' and then a small little smirky grin would appear. I met him at a school bus rodeo where he was a judge for the event. I hit every cone in the course and as I came to the finish line and turned off the engine, I knew I had zero points as my nerves had really taken over. I turned to him in the front seat and said, 'well that wasnt so bad". I was just so glad to have finished. In his quiet manner I heard him say, 'well no child of mine is riding your bus".....
We laughed about that for years. He would often attend Billys auctions and compete for the best deal. Now Mahon has the best deal as he is in the arms of a loving Jesus and once again reunited with his family.....always in our hearts and memory.

I worked with Mahlon when he was transportation supervisor (though he would have said he was in charge of the buses). He and I would always banter about needing to leave early -- me saying yes and him telling me no. Though a man of few words, I always enjoyed the ones I shared with him. Rest in Peace Mahlon.

Mr. Parr was a teacher who you admired and respected. The subject of math is not normally an exciting topic nor is the class something you would look forward to attend but Mr. Parr would get you through it day after day. As a college freshman struggling with Calculus and facing finals after Christmas break, I had reached a point in my studies where it seemed I might not understand enough to pass the final and the course. Desperate, I called Mr. Parr and asked if he could help me. Without hesitation he invited me over to his home where we sat together a few hours going over material. I passed the exam and continued with college in large part to the kindness of Mr. Parr. I remember thanking him as I left that night but did not realize then the magnitude of his gesture. Rest in Peace Mr. Parr

Mr. Parr was my bus driver for years and he was always so patient and kind on those noisy rides to school. He would greet all of us by name as we climbed up those stairs and found our seats. He was a kind and gentle soul and will be remembered fondly by those of us who had the honor to know him. May he rest in peace.
