Obituary of Rita M Kilcoyne

Rita M. Kilcoyne, age 93, a resident of Highland Nursing Home, Massena, and formerly of Brasher Falls, passed away peacefully late Tuesday evening, Feb. 6, with family by her side.

Born on May 16, 1924, in Oakland California, Rita was the daughter of Stephan and Amelia (Ostroff) Kuhar.  She married Anthony J. Kilcoyne on January 5, 1948, in the Church of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, with her cousin Fr. Lawrence Popchik officiating. They were together 56 years, until Tony’s death on March 13, 2004.

Rita is survived by their eight children: Kathleen and William Scharf, North Lawrence, NY; A. Jay and Christine Kilcoyne, Brasher Falls, NY; John and JoAnn Kilcoyne , Burlington, VT; Deborah and Eric Satterley, Warsaw, IN; Christopher and Heather Kilcoyne, Woodruff, SC;  Marilyn Charles, Ballston Spa, NY; Patrick and Sheila Kilcoyne, Brasher Falls, NY; and Bethanne and Richard Perry, Cadyville, NY. 

Rita is also survived by their 24 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. 

She was predeceased by her husband, Anthony Kilcoyne,  granddaughter Jessica Breindel Thisse, daughter-in-law Laura Patten Kilcoyne, brother Stephen Kuhar, and sisters Emily Felten, Cecelia Kuhar, Carolyn Nicholls, and Dorothy Kuhar.

Rita attended schools in Jamaica, NY, graduating from Jamaica High School, and Mary Immaculate Hospital School of Nursing. Rita worked in many different areas of nursing as a Registered Nurse. Retired from nursing in 1988, she was active in church and local organizations. She was a communicant and Eucharistic Minister at St. Patrick’s Church in   Brasher Falls.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Hammill Funeral Home in Winthrop. A Memorial Service will be Friday, April 20, 2018 at St. Lawrence Church in North Lawrence at 11am. Private burial will be at the parish cemetery. Family and friends are invited to a luncheon at the Riverview Restaurant in Brasher Falls following the memorial service.

 In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Food Pantry or the Gabriel Project at St. Patrick’s Church, Brasher Falls, or the Tri-Town Rescue Squad, Brasher Falls.
